Google Voice.
This is an amazing free app from Google, a company that played a very important role in the development of Android when it bought it from its creators. Google have tightly integrated all of their web apps with Android, especially Gmail, Docs, Calendar and Voice. The latter gives you the ability to have your own Google number, make cheap calls using VoIP, receive voice messages and have them transcribed into text, and much more. It’s an amazing tool that everyone can use, but it’s especially good for entrepreneurs, business people and frequent international travelers (because the Google Voice number can be redirected to any landline or cell number in the world).

Voice Text.
Voice Text is a great Android application that converts your speech into text. Yes, it’s basically a dictation tool for your smart phone! It can be very useful sometimes; for example, when you need to quickly compose a long email message (typing it would be pretty hard, even with a hardware keyboard, due to the small size of today’s phones). It can work with almost every app there is for Android, with a few very rare exceptions, but it doesn’t work well with Android 1.5 or older. The only thing you can do is update the OS to a newer version (your phone manufacturer should’ve released a suitable update by now).

DXTop.
Because Android is a free and open source mobile OS, you get perks like being able to completely customize your phones interface and home screen, a thing which you can’t do with the iPhone and is very difficult to do with Windows Mobile 6.5. DXTop is a great home screen replacement application that lets you completely personalize your Android device’s interface and home screen. There are a lot of great themes available, which you can try, or you can build your own using the documentation and help that the developers have on their site. You’ll have to be a pretty good programmer to do the latter, though.

ActionComplete.
This is a great task and project management application for Android that will enable you to not only create To Do lists and schedule your time ahead, but also manage small or medium sized projects with ease from your pocket. It has a lot of built in timers, actions and detail fields that make for an amazing work flow manager, and the app is built using the Getting Things Done System. Another interesting feature is the location aware manager, which allows you to keep separate Task and Project lists for work and home, and let the application automatically load and display the ones you need based on where you are (using the phone’s built in GPS transceiver).

Advanced Task Killer.
ATK is a must have utility for Android, because there are many third party apps that can easily crash the OS or just stay in the memory (a thing that normally should not happen), hog your phone’s resources and drain the battery. Few apps actually do that, but if you are suddenly experiencing slow downs or short battery life, then you can be sure there’s a badly written app at play. Advanced Task Killer allows you to manually (or automatically, if you bought the paid version) close any apps that you don’t use, yet are still in the memory. This app will save you lots of battery life and processing power, especially if you use a lot of apps at once.

Astro File Manager.
This is another application similar to Advanced Task Killed above, but which also has file management (as you could have guessed by looking at its name) and other useful tools built in. Aside from killing unresponsive apps, you can also manage your main and SD card space, open zip and tgz files, create playlists of mp3 files, manage files over SFTP (useful for server administrators) and backup and restore all of your phone’s apps. It’s a great tool to have installed, and it’s also completely free, so you have no reason not to try it!

The above apps are definitely a must have if you want to get the best experience out of your Android powered smart phone, but there are other great applications for various purposes on the marketplace. You should definitely search for whatever you need and check out any apps that you find interesting, especially if they’re free.
