The extra screen of iPad makes it suitable to be used as a GPS navigation device. The CoPilot GPS app which has a version for the iPhone, has now got a new version for the iPad 3G, called the CoPilot Live HD. The CoPilot Live HD app has been submitted to the Apple app store and the company behind it, ALK Technologies, expect the app to be available soon.
The CoPilot Live HD requires the 3G connectivity on the iPad 3G, and also the GPS receiver which the iPad WiFi lacks. The maps can be stored locally on the iPad, which allow you to plan route even no 3G connection. The app works either in landscape or portrait mode, depending on how the iPad is positioned or mounted. You can also use pinch to zoom on the maps and the controls on the iPad can accessed from within the CoPilot app.
The iPad CoPilot HD app has the features of the iPhone version including on-device street maps and voice-guide navigation. It also shows split-screen that presents 3D and 2D maps as well as driving instruction on the iPad.
The CoPilot Live HD app will first be available in the US as the iPad 3G will first be launched in US. But the app will also be made available in other countries once the iPad 3G launches there.
